When is it again? Mother’s Day is always the second Sunday in May in Australia (same as the US). So, that’s Sunday 12th May, 2024.
Here’s some Mother’s Day trivia for you. Apparently, it was an Aussie woman who started the tradition of giving gifts on Mother's Day. Janet Heyden, from Leichhardt Sydney, started a campaign in 1924 to collect gifts for lonely aged mothers. How good!
These days, the most popular “go-to” gifts for Mother’s Day are flowers, chocolates and cards. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, but we’ll help you with a few alternatives that they’ll LOVE.

My daughter made me an at-home spa treatment as a Mother’s Day gift when she was about 12 years old. It was complete with homemade soaps and scented oils, a deck chair pulled in from the garden as a treatment chair and cucumber eye patches. Pure love, just gorgeous and something I will remember forever. It would be equally appreciated at any age and (almost) any standard. A fun Mother’s Day gift idea for dads with young kiddos looking to celebrate mum!
Mum will absolutely love a card from everyone. Send all the family a link and they can upload a photo and message online. We’ll even remind your siblings to sign it so you don’t have to! Once she’s finished send it digitally, print it out at home or at Officeworks for about $2. It’s free to create at GroupTogether.com. An absolute winner for mum's gift!
You’ve no doubt heard the benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase - taming hair, avoiding facial wrinkles and won’t steal your pricey facial night creams overnight. The real joy is that it just feels heavenly. When we evaluated the pros and cons of over ten leading brands, any that were pure silk were nice but it’s impossible to go past a brand that has over 18,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. It’s also about half the price of the beautiful Australian brand Silk (which is gorgeous) so you can buy a pair. And yes you can machine wash them.
This is not just a coffee table book. Letters of Great Women brings together 50 key female voices on the most significant moments in history, and the everyday joys, sorrows and struggles of women's lives. I’ve given this to many of the fabulous women in my life and they say they refer to it when looking for inspiration. A beautiful mum's day gift to remind her of her own strength and resilience.
Chocolates for Mother's Day? No prizes for originality but a LOT of prizes for the super cool, contemporary, bold designs of their packaging and matching cards and the delicious, handmade chockies. Knock yourself out choosing all her faves or yours. She might just share if you’re lucky!
This little bowl exemplifies our gift-giving philosophy. Give the best of something small rather than the cheapest of something big. That’s what makes it wonderful. The only thing difficult about the decision to give something from Mud Australia as a Mother’s Day gift is choosing which one and which gorgeous colour. We choose pistachio but there’s something every mum will go gaga for. This little one (just 13cm in diameter) is perfect to hold jewellery from the day on a bedside table. She’ll adore it every day.
Ok, so these aren’t pretty, but according to Candi Burger, flower farmer and owner of Oxley Hill Flower Farm in Bowral, NSW, they are the bees knees for a gardening enthusiast.
These fleece-lined, rubber-coated and Japanese-made gardening gloves are essential for keeping your hands warm and mud-free in Winter or Summer, weather is pretty weird nowadays! Candi should know, one minute she’s knee-deep in fertiliser and the next, arranging her freshly picked flowers looking like a delicate rose herself (hands in perfect nick). If budget permits, maybe add a few flowers (or seeds) for the perfect Mother’s Day gift for a gardener.
If your mum finally gets a moment to go for a run or walk, does she have to carry her keys, wallet, phone and chapstick with her? Let’s help her stop doing that with this nifty bag - it's super light, hands-free and easy to wear cross-body or as a belt.
Julie gave me one of these Chanel lip glosses because I can’t go to an important meeting without lipgloss on. It’s the only girly thing I do. I feel, well, polished. Plus, there’s something fabulous about channelling Chanel. The colour “Rose Naif (#804)” is almost colourless so you can’t go wrong. It just looks a bit rosy. I wouldn’t say any lip gloss lasts but at least this one looks and feels great while it lasts. I also love the packaging; both the tube itself and the darling little chic bag. Such a luxury that you wouldn’t buy yourself. An elegant gift idea for Mother's Day.
There’s a reason sending flowers is a cliche. It’s because it’s always an absolute treat. If you can’t give your Mother’s Day gift yourself, have flowers delivered to let her know you’re thinking of her. The Colour Bouquet from Daily Blooms is gorgeous and available in three sizes.
Tip: Mother’s Day is on a Sunday in 2024. It’s best to get flowers delivered on Friday. You’ll get bonus points from Mum for not leaving it to the last minute. (She can’t see that your bed isn’t made so you’ll be winning).
You can never have too many of these rustic wooden bowls - we will die on that hill! Hailing from Kerala in Southern India, it’s perfect for fruit, styling or at an entrance for keys and bits and bobs. They’re handcrafted and are 33cm diameter x 11.5cm high. A great gift idea for mum.
As their reviewer said - “Totally blown away with the results from the beginning to the end. The hard cover book is totally amazing and worth buying for each of your love ones. I give it a 10. My children and grandchildren will read and know about there grandparents like they were with them their whole life even though we been deceased a long time ago. Thank You so much for the opportunity to live on forever.”
This is a really special Mother’s Day gift. Every week, your mum receives an email with a question to answer about her life. She emails the response and Storyworth collates the responses to print and send a book at the end of the year. Such a timeless gift for your mum and family.
No two mums are the same so no Mother's Day gift is perfect for every mother, but having one hour of pampering has to come close. Endota Spa is an Aussie brand with over 100 spa locations so there will be one close to you. Unless you’re in the boonies, sorry we can’t help you on this one! There’s also a special spa at The Four Seasons in Sydney for a real day out.
Can we just take a moment for this white-washed haven? Mum would feel better just being there. There are so many options to choose from; massage, facial, infrared sauna, ice bath (brrr), laser treatment or whatever she chooses. A perfect Mother’s Day suggestion to hint at your forgetful siblings.

Mum still wearing the same makeup from when she was a teenager? Let’s stop that, she deserves a refresh. Makeup consultations are a great way to get professional advice, try new products and then go home with the loot! The price is redeemable for products on the day so she can pick up what she loves while she’s there. A double present if you will!
There’s a reason there’s so much hype around Lululemon. They are just so much more flattering than any other leggings. We rate these because they are high wasted (make you feel held in) but they don’t fall or curl down. They have deep pockets for a phone so you can be hands-free and aren’t see-through. Plus no camel! Tysm. A great gift idea for mum that she can get heaps of wear out of.
You know what mum loves? Spending time with you! Don’t roll your eyes as we say that. Take the opportunity to do something special together. Whether she likes a Broadway musical, sporting events, dance or big art gallery events, it will be remembered well beyond the usual choccies or flowers. In 2024 post-Mothers Day events include: Macklemore, Nick Cave, Missy Higgins, Coldplay, James Blunt and Belinda Carlisle. In comedy, there are laughs from Dawn French performing in Sydney. Travel to Dark MOFO in Tas, Illuminate in Adelaide, Football Grand Finals, Melbourne Cup, State of Origin, Chicago the Musical, Beauty and the Beast. A beautiful gift for mum this Mother's Day that will live in her memory forever.
Apart from being a female-owned and an Australian small business, we love Arms of Eve because they manage to capture the styles that are in, at a great price. Their pieces look high quality and wear well. We love these earings in particular for mums because they're not “mumsy”. They feel fashionable but not fashion victim, youthful but not too young. It’ll make her feel great.
PS: This is the perfect mum present for the siblings to GroupTogether to get one great piece she’ll wear again and again, thinking lovingly of you all every time! Winner!

One of the hard things about being a mum is losing yourself. You give up your hobbies to make time for everyone else. Class Bento makes a great Mother’s Day gift, letting mum escape to do some fun learning. Whether it’s learning how to make dumplings, cheese, cocktails, pottery or arts and crafts. Choose a lesson for one, or go with her. It’s special experiences like this that will be remembered.
Does mum love her Apple products? This might be the moment for everyone to chip in with GroupTogether to give her what she really wants. If it’s AirPods, they’ll even personalise them for free.
This bracelet needs no introduction and makes a gorgeous gift for mum. It’s delicate, 9-karat gold and they’ll even engrave it for you. Maybe just “<3 Jade” or “we <3 you”.
Is this really practical? No, but that’s not the point. Just because mums are mums doesn’t mean they don’t want to feel pampered. Mum can throw it on when the doorbell rings at 8 am and look glam. It’s machine washable and looks great even without losing that weight she doesn’t need to lose. We like this one in navy because it’s classic, never transparent and long enough to cover everything plus be glamorous.
Have you heard your mum talking about this? It’s a perfect Mother’s Day gift as she’d love it but it’s pricey so she’d never buy it herself. People are RAVING about it, with over 37000 5-star reviews, it’s a no-brainer. She’ll be stoked!
The GOAT of mums day gifts. This really says thanks for constantly waiting up for me to make sure I came home safe. It includes 2.5 hours of nothing but pampering - including massage, facial, plus access to the pool and hydrotherapy facilities. She can hide here all day and melt the stress away.
