Although it can be dreaded for the birthday boy, friends cannot let a 50th birthday go by without some celebration! But what do you buy for the birthday boy that will make it memorable? I have a few friends who just turned 50 and they received many small novelty gifts (you know, the funny walking stick, the 50th beer mug etc) that ended up either being re-gifted at the next 50th or worse, put into the back of a cupboard for the next decade.
We have a great idea to ensure you make your friend’s birthday much more memorable – and it is simple! Let everyone chip in easily online – create and share a GroupTogether collection. Anyone who wants to chip in can pay online, sign the card and you’re done. They handle the reminders too so it’s not awkward! You can get the money transferred to you to buy the gift. Or buy a “choose your own” gift card from GroupTogether that lets the birthday boy choose his own gift card! Easy!
Over a weekend camping trip, I went around to all the men in the campground and asked what they would love for their 50th. Here are their responses:
Interestingly there were quite a few men who thought hiring a Harley for a day would be a great experience! They would be able to choose their own itinerary once they were on the bike and feel the freedom of the open road … if only for the day! There are a few companies that hire out Harley Davidson’s in Australia, including
For those that don’t have their motorbike license, hiring a Ferrari or similar was the next best thing!
In the last couple of years, craft beer has become big thing; and what better way to mark the occasion than to do a day craft beer tour with the boys! Tours are available in almost all capital cities and generally include transportation, taken to approximately 3-5 craft breweries and lunch! Definitely a day to remember!
Here is a list of some Craft Beer Tours:
Also on the list of most of the men questioned was a weekend (or week!) away with the boys doing what they loved best – and this varied for many of them. The examples were:
At no point did any of the men say ‘pamper weekend with the boys’!!!!
There were a few groups of campers and when bantering around ideas, they came up with a the birthday boy going skydiving! Many were unsure that they would do it, but if a day was made around it, and all the boys were there, then it would be unlikely for the birthday boy to chicken out! Check out Skydive Australia to see if they have a jump site near you. Alternatively, check out #9 below, as the RedBalloon voucher can be redeemed with a few skydiving companies too!
A truly memorable experience would be to learn to fly! There are packages that include introductory lessons, partial license and full license qualifications.
A few companies offering Learn to Fly Packages include:
There are a few iconic bridges that now allow climbers to go up on sunset and experience a different view of the area/city. A certain level of fitness is required, although you certainly don’t need to be a gym junkie!
Some of the bridges in Australia include:
The large number of men said a gift card to a fun shop like BCF would be great as they could buy something they wanted, without guilt! It’s one of the gift cards offered by GroupTogether.
Best of all, they have a diverse range of stock, so there is something for (almost) every man out there!
How about a subscription to a monthly craft beer delivery! This is the gift that keeps giving … every month! There are quite a few craft beer subscription companies popping up, but to save you the hassle of looking, here are three:
If you want to give an experience, but your not sure exactly what experience the birthday boy would want, then a RedBalloon gift voucher is the way to go!
RedBalloon is a website that has some really amazing experiences that can be selected by the birthday boy. You can either choose a gift card or nominate the actual experience! For example, For example, the birthday boy can choose:

On Friday mornings, I look forward to a home delivery and I am never disappointed. A smiling young baker-apprentice brings me the most beautiful, yummy, freshly-baked loaves of bread, that never fail to put a smile on
